The Voice I Heard Beneath the Desk

In the Bible, Joseph is famous as the man of dreams. Perhaps because his life left such a strong impression, I too tend to dream quite often. From another perspective, however, this might also mean that I don’t sleep very deeply. While studying in the English-speaking world here in New Zealand, I went through many hardships. As a result, one thing I seem to have gained is insomnia—the difficulty of falling asleep. Even now, that struggle continues. If I ever happen to take a nap during the day, it would be nothing short of a miracle for me.

Whenever I fail to fall into a deep sleep, I inevitably dream a lot. Of course, most of those dreams vanish as soon as I wake up. Yet some remain vivid and unforgettable. I have a habit of jotting those particular dreams down somewhere. One of them is what I would like to share today. As always, it’s not easy to express in writing what I saw, heard, and experienced in a dream.

As a pastor, I have always carried a deep longing to experience God more personally in my daily life. Then, on the early morning of August 15, I had a dream. It struck me later that this was Korea’s Independence Day. I even thought, If someone like the Apostle John had recorded this, it might have become another Revelation.

August 15 was a Friday. At that time, I had been earnestly seeking God’s will regarding a specific prayer topic. That night, as I was desperately asking the Lord for His guidance, it felt as though He allowed me to see one of His divine secrets. I still remember that dream vividly, because it was so clear and its message so distinct. Of course, it also means I didn’t sleep deeply. Yet my spirit was filled with joy, as if I had received an answer through a vision.

In that dream, I realized why certain passages of Scripture that I had read over and over still hadn’t made sense to me. I saw, beneath a large desk, three radiant beings. Since they were hidden under the desk, I had to lower my body and my line of sight to see them. When I humbled myself and looked down, I could clearly see the three beings united as one form, and from above came a voice saying, “I am God.” The words deeply moved me within the dream.

After waking, I came to understand something profound: merely knowing that God exists does not mean we can fully hear His voice. First, we must lower our viewpoint from above. Then, we must be willing to go beneath what hides the truth. Only then can we begin to perceive that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are truly one. And when that realization dawns, the God who once seemed flat and one-dimensional now appears in depth and fullness. I often find myself astonished as I begin to see what I could not see before.
